A principal's overall rating is comprised of 25% professional practice, 25% site management, 20% professional responsibilities, and 30% student learning. This includes a holistic rating on each of the seven components of the Building Administrator Professional Responsibilities Rubric, one professional growth goal, and two to four student learning objectives.

The Rhode Island Department of Education manages and is responsible for program approval. Programs are assessed via a standards-based rubric based on evidence such as program products, candidate products, written documentation, stakeholder interviews, on-site observations, and clinical site observations.
