The standards include the following six performance areas: Living a Mission and Vision Focused on Results; Leading and Managing Systems Change; Improving Teaching and Learning; Building and Maintaining Collaborative Relationships; Leading with Integrity and Professionalism; and Creating and Sustaining a Culture of High Expectations.
Use of standards 
The leadership standards are used to inform administrative endorsements. A modified version of the standards are required for measuring professional practice in administrator evaluations.

Description of evaluation system 
The locally developed evaluation system must consider the principal's specific duties, specify the principal's strengths and weaknesses, be aligned with the Illinois Professional Standards for School Leaders, and use data and indicators on student growth as a significant factor. Student growth, as measured by two assessments including one state standardized assessment, should be at least 25% of the total evaluation for the first 2 years and 30% afterward.

Principal preparation program accreditation or approval standards 
All preparation programs in Illinois must meet CAEP standards which include: Content and Pedagogical Knowledge; Clinical Partnerships and Practice; Candidate Quality, Recruitment, and Selectivity; Program Impact; Provider Quality Assurance and Continuous Improvement
Description of program approval review process 
The Principal Preparation Review Panel, which includes two current teachers, four current principals, two current superintendents, two individuals from institutes of higher education, and one representative from the business community, conducts reviews and recommends whether a program should be approved. Programs submit: a description of their mission; descriptions of partnerships with districts or local schools; descriptions of internship components; coursework requirements including syllabi and mode of delivery; faculty experience; and candidate admission requirements. The review panel conducts on-site visits to confirm this information and makes final recommendations.
