The Office of the State Superintendent of Education is engaged with other stakeholders in discussions about potential leadership standards for DC. Many DC LEAs use the 2008 ISLLC or the 2015 PSEL standards for their principals and school leaders.

Description of evaluation system 
For DC Public Schools: The principal evaluation has two equally weighted components: student outcome goals and leadership framework standards. The student outcome goals are based on PARCC goals (30% in elementary and middle school; 20% in high school), school-specific goals (20% in elementary, 10% in middle and high school). In middle and high schools, student satisfaction and school climate comprise 10%. In high school, graduation and promotion comprise 10%. The leadership framework is rubric based and draws on observations and artifacts.

Principal preparation program accreditation or approval standards 
CAEP includes five standards: Content and Pedagogical Knowledge; Clinical Partnerships and Practice; Candidate Quality, Recruitment, and Selectivity; Program Impact; and Provider Quality, Continuous Improvement, and Capacity. DC's Educational Administration and Leadership Standards includes seven standards: Vision; Postive School Culture and Instructional Program; Manage Organization, Operations, and Resources; Family and Community; and Internship
Description of program approval review process 
There are two pathways for the accreditation and program approval of educator and principal preparation units. One pathway is for educator/principal preparation units operating within an institution of higher education (IHE). The second pathway is for educator/principal units that do not operate within an IHE. Units and programs within an IHE are joint-approved by Office of State Superintendent of Education and the Council for the Accreditation of Educator Preparation (CAEP). Non-IHE units and programs are state-approved.
Minimum years of educational experience or degree required by candidate for acceptance to principal preparation program 
To receive an initial credential, a prospective principal must have a bachelor's degree, has completed a master’s degree or higher, or has completed a state-approved educator preparation program in school leadership and supervision,and has completed at least 2 years of full-time PreK-12 teaching, instructional leadership, and/or pupil services experience.
